Acid Graphics vs Neo-Brutalism

Both are loud, both use hard edges and flat colour, and both are frequently described as anti-design. One is dark and acidic; the other is light and sweet.

Short answer: Acid graphics runs on black, one lime accent and tightly packed negative tracking, with a fixed 5-degree skew. Neo-brutalism runs on cream, five pastel fills and 8px hard shadows, with everything upright.

Both panels load the same page — only the stylesheet differs.

What actually separates them

The shapes are similar enough that a screenshot can be mistaken for the other: thick borders, no gradients, flat colour, type doing most of the work. The temperature is completely different.

Acid graphics compresses: letter-spacing at minus 0.03 to 0.04em, a headline skewed about five degrees, offsets held at a fixed 6px so the misalignment reads as a system rather than an accident. Neo-brutalism expands: cream ground, five candy fills, 8px shadows, and every block sitting squarely on the grid with no rotation at all.

Decision table

A filled dot marks the side that handles the dimension more convincingly. It is a judgement, not a rule — several rows are genuinely a tie.

Dimension Acid Graphics Neo-Brutalism
Ground Near-black #0a0a0a Cream #fdfdf7
Palette One acid lime, plus black ● Five pastels plus black borders
Type Negative tracking, skewed headline Upright, heavy weights
Offset Fixed 6px displacement 8px hard shadow
Corners 2px 0
Reading comfort Low by design ● Moderate — pastels are gentler than lime

The CSS that changes

These are the declarations that make the difference visible. Everything else — font sizes, spacing, section order — is shared, because both pages use the same markup.

When each one wins

Acid Graphics wins when

  • The audience is young, the content is music or events, and the page is a poster rather than a document
  • You want a single loud screen — a launch hero, a cover, a teaser
  • The brand can afford to be disliked by part of the audience

Neo-Brutalism wins when

  • The page has to stay usable for several minutes rather than five seconds
  • You need multiple cards or items differentiated by colour
  • The brand is playful but still wants to be trusted with a transaction

Steering a model to one or the other

Name the ground first: black for acid, cream for neo-brutalism. That one line does more than the style name, because both names are vague. Then give the offset as a number and say whether it is a shadow or a displacement — acid displaces the element, neo-brutalism hangs a hard shadow beneath it. Finally, state the palette count: one accent for acid, five named pastels for neo-brutalism. A model asked for either without a count will produce four or five colours and land somewhere in between.
